Secure Erase

1. What is Secure Erase Function?

Maximus Secure Erase function can be divided into two types: "Sanitization" and "Clear". "Sanitization" is the processing of declassifying the drive by executing an unrecoverable removal of fall data on the media. In a NAND Flash based SSD, this initiated a sequence of block-by-block erase, pattern write and pattern verify operation designed to eliminate any trace of the original data. In short, when "Sanitization" is activated, only data will be erased uncoverably, the drive can be recyclingly used.

"CLEAR" is the processing of erasing data on the media. In a NAND Flash based SSD, this is done by executing a block-by-block eras with verify. This function implements the block-by-block erase on entire physical flash blocks including user data area and reserved area for FW, spare and logical to physical mapping table. To make it simple, if "CLEAR" is activated, not only the data but also the firmware will be erased, the drive cannot be used any more and will have to be sent back to manufacturer for re-loading. So Maximus does not suggest you activate this function anyway.

2. What series of products an be equipped with Secure Erase function?

Unlike other SSD suppliers who can only make Secure Erase function on standard 2.5'' products, Maximus is able to make it not only on 2.5'' SATAIII series, but also on 1.8''/mSATA/Half Slim products, which offers you a wider range of products for selection. Below are some pictures of Maximus Half Slim products with Secure Erase function, this product has been applied to French military projects, it's equiped with military level 32GB SLC flash, anti-shock, anti-vibration, with conformal coating to keep itself aways in good condition and 8.8mm PIN to trigger the erase function. Its stability and fast speed of erasing have been spoken highly of by customers since they used it months ago and they will further cooperate with Maximus on military products on but not restricted to this series.

3. How is Secure Erase function proceeded?

Maximus Secure Erase function can be triggered by two modes, the erasing command can be placed through PIN13/PIN14 on the original 22 SATA PINs, Maximus can also newly set another 3 PINs on the SATA PIN side as picture below. For the methods to trigger the Secure Erase function, Maximus offers two types too, one is through ATA command(by this way you should have corresponded software support, Maximus can also offer this service), the other through Physical Button(the easier way customers always prefer.

5. How fast is the Erasing speed and what capacity does it reach?

The erasing speed can be customized by your needs, and commonly it can reach up to 8~10GB/s, which means, once the function is triggered, full-256GB-data can be erased totally within no more than 30 seconds.

For the capacity issue, standard 2.5'' SATAII products can reach up to 1024GB on MLC, 512GB on SLC; Half Slim products up to 128GB on MLC, 64GB on SLC. mSATA up to 128GB on MLC, 64GB on SLC.
